Low-Maintenance Exterior Material Options for Your Home

Upgrading your home’s exterior with low-maintenance materials can shrink your to-do list and boost your curb appeal. These durable options save you time and effort and also maintain their appearance for years before needing attention. From weather-resistant trim to long-lasting siding and decking, homeowners can easily minimize upkeep without compromising on style or quality.

Types of Low-Maintenance Exterior Materials

Before we dive into specific products, let’s look at the different materials you may encounter when shopping for low-maintenance exterior fencing, trim, siding, and decking.

Poly-Ash

Poly-ash, marketed under the name TruExterior, is a material composed of adhesive polymers and fly-ash recovered from coal-burning power plants. Its unique composition allows for uniform milling into paint-grade exterior products such as siding, molding, and trim.

TruExterior products remain stable across various temperatures. This helps extend the life of any paint you apply. Poly-ash can even survive ground contact, making it versatile for different exterior applications. All TruExterior products come with a 20-year warranty.

Cellular PVC

Cellular PVC is an advanced form of vinyl that offers the look and feel of wood without wood maintenance issues like rotting, warping, and splitting. Nitrogen gas is injected into the vinyl during cellular PVC manufacturing, causing it to swell and create a cellular structure. The resulting product has the same density and dimensions as solid pine but is free from defects, immune to decay, and resistant to insects.

This material is an excellent choice for exterior applications like trim, moldings, and siding. Note that cellular PVC expands and contracts lengthwise with temperature changes, so you’ll need to take those changes into account during installation for a seamless finish.

Engineered Wood

Engineered wood is a versatile material created by reconstituting wood into stronger, more stable products. It involves slicing wood into veneers, flakes, or strands and gluing them back together to form boards, beams, or sheets. While engineered wood is stronger and more stable than natural wood, it’s more susceptible to moisture damage.

Commonly used in interior applications such as framing, flooring, and cabinetry, engineered wood requires thorough saturation with preservatives to withstand outdoor conditions. This process enhances its durability, making it suitable for exterior use in fencing and other outdoor structures.

Fiber Cement

Fiber cement is a composite material that combines wood fiber with cement, creating durable siding. This unique blend preserves the wood fibers in a high-pH, rot-free environment for a strong and crack-resistant product. Temperature changes don’t affect fiber cement siding, so paint lasts significantly longer. It’s heavier than some alternatives.

Although fiber cement isn’t entirely immune to moisture, proper installation and maintenance can help prevent water absorption. Prime or caulk cuts and overdriven nails in your fiber cement siding or trim, and keep them clear of the ground and adjacent roof surfaces.

Composite Decking

Composite decking has evolved significantly since its inception, offering homeowners a durable and low-maintenance alternative to traditional wood decking. Though originally made from recycled milk jugs melted and mixed with wood fiber, modern composites incorporate various materials to achieve specific performance characteristics and match different price points.

The best composite decking products have a cap layer of acrylic, which is a UV-resistant polymer that you can color and texture to mimic wood grain. This protective layer enhances the deck’s appearance and provides superior resistance to decay, insect damage, and fading. The textured surface also helps prevent slips, especially when the deck is wet.

Examples of Low-Maintenance Exterior Materials

Now that you know more about the materials available, let’s explore a few specific products we recommend.

Duration Crown Molding

Duration crown molding, made from TruExterior poly-ash, is resistant to water and barely affected by temperature changes. It’s even fire resistant, so you can use it in areas prone to wildfires.

This 9-inch-wide molding cuts smoothly with standard carbide saw blades. You can fasten it with 15- or 16-gauge nails as close as 1⁄8 inch from an edge without splitting or crumbling.

The Canvas siding series from Versatex is a low-maintenance cellular PVC option for porch ceilings and soffits. This tongue-and-groove product with a water-resistant wood-look laminate is perfect for coastal areas. It comes in many finishes, with stealth bead, WP4, bed molding, and crown decorative profiles available. Versatex offers a limited lifetime warranty with 12-year coverage on the film laminate.

Elements Performance Fencing

LP Elements Performance Fencing offers flat top and dog ear pickets that blend the look of wood with enhanced durability. Made from wood strands held together with water-resistant resin and treated with zinc borate, these pickets resist fungi and termites. They come primed or painted. The painted overlay adds extra protection and comes with a 10-year warranty. These pickets are available in seven pre-finished colors, three widths (3 1/2, 5 5⁄16, or 6 inches), and two heights (6 or 8 feet).

Although this fencing won’t warp, you do need to apply exterior-grade paint on any cuts or nail penetrations.

Molded-in saw marks, varied widths, and individual installation create an authentic shingled appearance. These solid polypropylene shingles retain their color for years, resisting the fading and weathering that quickly affects natural cedar. They’re available in 39 colors and backed by a lifetime limited warranty covering defects, plus a 10-year guarantee against excessive fading.
